A question the latest Perovskite Patent Landscape report from cintelliq ltd aims to answer is - "are there any observable differences in the patent filing strategies of commercials assignees compared to academic assignees?"
If you analyse all perovskite patents as a single group the analysis shows rapid growth in the number of published patents from 2014 onwards (light-blue bar chart). The number of published patents peak in 2017 with just over 1000 recorded.
If you examine the same dataset in terms of the number of unique patent families published each year will highlight the number of new inventions each year (the grey bar chart) - this shows the number of patent inventions is also growing each year.
The difference between these two bar charts represents the number of patents filed in other patent offices beyond the original patent office.
The orange line represents the priority year in which the patent families where filed - and here it is clear that many of the published patents are based on inventions derived between 2012 and 2016.
Academic filings of perovskite patents
If you examine only academic assignees you see the published patents still peak in 2017 just about 600 published patents. While the number of unique patent families is also high each year, not too much lower than the number of published patents - suggesting most academic assignees are filing fewer patents beyond their initial filing office - in essence they are focused on local protection and not seeking international patent protection. Further, analysis shows that most of the inventions were filed recently.
Commercial filings of perovskite patents
In contrast, commercial assignees have filed less patents overall, and have fewer unique patent families but they file the patents more widely as they seek to gain international protection of the intellectual property - difference from current academic filings. Commercial assignees are based on inventions that were filed 2013 and 2016.
Specific examples
This is highlighted by two examples an academic assignee - huazhong university of science and technology and a commercial assignee - hunt energy enterprises llc
huazhong university of science and technology
Huazhong University of Science and Technology is clearly focused on filing patents locally and not internationally. This suggests this academic assignees has filed many inventions but currently only seeks local protection.
hunt energy enterprises llc
Hunt Energy Enterprises LLC are largely focused on seeking international protection on a small number of patent families. These patents are based on inventions filed between 2012 and 2015.
The Perovskite Patent Landscape analyses more than 490 assignees identifying those focused on local protection compared to those assignees focused on international protection.
