Perovskite patenting activities continues unabated with more than 2800 published and granted patents

The gap between the top commercial and top academic assignees is increasing rapidly

10 Sep 2018 | Editor

In our latest Perovskite Photovoltaic: A review fo the patent landscape finds more than 2800 patents were published and granted patents between 2010 and the end of August 2018. An interesting finding highlights that of these patents 52% have bee published and granted within the past 18 months.

Commercial assignees leading the way

Oxford Photovoltaics Ltd still leads with more than 150 published and granted patents, the top four patent assignees are all commercial organisations in fact only five of the top fourteen patent assignees are commercial - these are academic. However, what can be observed is the gap between commercial and academic assignees is beginning to become every greater in terms of the number of patents held.

The top fourteen patent assignees hold a total of 892 published and granted patents, holding 25 or more each. The top four hold 510 of these, and the top five commercial assignees hold 561 compared to the top nine academic assignees who hold collectively 331 published and granted patents.

Academics have more patents published and granted each year but recent commercial activities could signal a change

Since 2010 academic patent filing have been greater than commercial filings, however at the end of August 2018 commercial published and granted patents are just ahead of academic filings for year-to-date. The small change may be a early signal that commercial filings may be set to overtake academic filings.
