Polyera has announced they have achieved a certified world-record efficiency of 6.4% for a fully-polymeric organic photovoltaic device. This result was obtained in an inverted bulk heterojunction architecture combining Polyera new ActivInk® PV2700 active layer blend, consisting of proprietary polymeric donor and polymeric acceptor semiconductors, and improves upon Polyera's previous world record of 5.2%.
Prior to Polyera achievements, the efficiencies for fully-polymeric cells had been around 3% (uncertified). The all-polymer device record performance was certified by NREL.
Dr. Antonio Facchetti, co-founder and CTO of Polyera, said, "While the best performing organic solar cells continue to use fullerenes, based on our latest results and our current understanding, we believe that, in the future, non-fullerene acceptors will enable higher efficiencies and better stability than can currently be achieved with fullerene-based cells. Such non-fullerene, polymeric acceptors will also be important to tailor the photoactive blend absorption spectrum, which is of critical importance in the rapidly developing field of tandem OPV." Antonio added, "We'd also like to thank the team at NREL, and particularly Dana Olson, for their support in this critical area of research and in additional studies using their unique interlayers."
