Plastic Logic has announced that the company has been awarded the Elektronik Optoelectronic Product of the Year 2013 Award for its full colour flexible plastic displays.

The Elektronik Product of the Year Awards are chosen by the readers of the Elektronik magazine, Germany’s leading names in German media for the developers and industrial users of electronic products. The ten most innovative and future-oriented products are nominated by the magazine’s editorial team in ten categories and presented to the readers, who then vote for their favourite products online or via post or fax. The winners are announced during the annual Elektronik Products of the Year Awards dinner. This year’s event marked the 15th anniversary of the awards and was held in Munich, Germany.

According to Plastic Logic company's low-power unbreakable, colour and monochrome flexible "plastic" displays are thinner, lighter and much more robust than standard glass-based electrophoretic displays. The company has developed and qualified its process for the manufacture of these display, which can be read in all lighting conditions, including broad daylight and can be viewed from any angle. Plastic Logic’s displays are fully commercially available for integration in today’s next-generation applications and products. Full colour electrophoretic plastic displays represent a significant milestone, achieved by a radical new colour filter alignment process, which minimises distortion and enables perfect alignment of the flexible layers. The resulting display exceeds the colour performance of standard EPD-based glass displays, due to the reduced absorption and reflections seen with the plastic colour filter. Source: Plastic Logic

Indro Mukerjee, CEO Plastic Logic said, "Plastic Logic’s development of a colour flexible plastic display is particularly significant, since the same process could enable unbreakable, flexible display solutions with other media such as LCD and OLED. The need for unbreakable and flexible electronic systems is the next frontier and I am delighted that the readers of Elektronik are so impressed by our displays, which are enabling companies to reach that frontier today. Plastic Logic is actively promoting its flexible plastic displays to OEMs and product manufacturers from a wide range of markets, include mobile devices, document replacement solutions, signage, healthcare, sportswear and automotive."
