It has been reported on the Tech-on news website that Panasonic Corp has developed a business-use camcorder equipped with an organic image sensor capable of shooting 8k video.

Panasonic stated that the organic image sensor can switch between the high-sensitivity mode and high-saturation (wide-dynamic-range) mode. This is a feature that is difficult to accomplish with existing inorganic image sensors using silicon photodiodes.

A prototype of the camcorder was recently exhibited at Inter BEE 2018, a trade show on broadcast equipment, which took place in mid Nov 2018, at Makuhari Messe, in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan.

According to the Tech-on news report Panasonic aims to release an 8K organic image sensor camcorder in late 2019.

The organic image sensor:

  • can realise a "global shutter," which exposes all the pixels at the same time and reads out the data all at once
  • can have a step less electronic ND (natural density) filter function - evenly reduces the amount of light without changing colour balance
  • has a high sensitivity and a wide dynamic range
  • has a high frame rate of 60fps

Panasonic had previously announced the 8K-video-compatible organic image sensor of the camcorder at ISSCC (International Solid-State Circuits Conference) 2018, an international academic conference on semiconductor circuit technologies, which took place in February 2018.
